Polished concrete flooring and touches of soft oak timber complement the home’s earthy, neutral palette and Mid-Century design. The island bench was designed not only with cooking in mind, doubling as a great spot for casual dining or catch-ups.

Strong lines and monochrome tones create a cool, crisp elevation. White painted brick adds subtle texture, contrasted with darker elements and a stone-clad garden bed. Varying textures, materials and geometric shapes were all employed to produce this stunning Mid-Century modern-styled elevation.

where we started

Mike and Gen had purchased their block and were seeking advice on how to best achieve their lifestyle requirements as a family of four, whilst staying within their budget. Clever zoning of the house, a large outdoor living area and pool, along with an aesthetic which reflected their personality, was important on their agenda.

THE JOURNEY

A number of discovery meetings were had to get to know the family while building up a budget plan of all probable costs they would need to consider. We developed two budget plan scenarios to determine whether a double or single storey build would suit their budget and lifestyle requirements best. Mike and Gen opted for the single storey build, but wanted to ensure they weren’t sacrificing on space. After completing a footprint sketch and a detailed budget plan, we were confident in achieving Mike and Gen’s goals for their home. We created u-shape design, maximising the orientation while zoning the house into three wings; a parents’ retreat, central entertaining wing, and a rear wing for the kids. While all three zones are segregated, they are all united by the stunning central outdoor living space.

How was your experience working with Coast?

“We had a great experience with the Coast team. We were rather specific on what we wanted, the way we like to live etc., and Coast were adaptable to this and took the time to listen to some of our crazy ideas. They offered great guidance during the design phase to ensure that what we wanted was functional, pragmatic and integrated seamlessly, with a natural flow between areas. We signed just before the building boom in WA and didn’t have too many delays, but where we did the communication and follow up was excellent. They managed the build process and made it look easy.”

What do you appreciate the most about your home?

“A layout suitable for a growing family that caters for independence between children and parents, whilst at the same time offers ‘inviting’ and connected living areas to be together as a family. The open space and seamless connection between the garden and pool areas, bedrooms and living areas is an important feature for us, that has been absolutely nailed by Coast Homes. The higher ceilings and pitched roof line, paired with a single step down to the concrete floor in the living areas, make the house feel very open and airy.”

What were you aiming to achieve with the design?

“We wanted a functional home that allowed us to be at home comfortably as our children grow up. We had strong ideas on things we were looking to achieve in our home, that created a space for things we love doing. Once we landed on a C-shape single storey concept, we iterated numerous times on ideas to optimise the layout and tweaked a few things once the build commenced. Having now lived in the home for eight months, there is nothing we regret not doing, and more importantly, nothing we’d want to change.”

Would you recommend Coast?

“Definitely. Mainly because of the outcome that we love, but also it was easy to work with Coast, especially the communication and trust we built up with the team during the build process. A very talented, dedicated, supportive team, and a pleasure to engage with.”
